'Fairy chimney in the making.'
'Fairy chimneys' catch the early sunlight in the White (Baglidere) Valley, north of the Cappadocian village of Göreme. These huge pillars are sculptured by erosion from soft volcanic tuff layers. They are topped by a cap of harder more solidified ash (ignimbrite) which protects them from further degradation. In the left foreground a pillar can be seen which is in the process of being 'freed' from the tuff plateau that borders the valley. Photo Mick Palarczyk.
