Germany: Coast and Islands of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern
The coast of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, with its islands Rügen, Hiddensee, Usedom and Fischland-Darss-Zingst, has become the favourite sea destination of the Germans. Safely kept away behind the Iron Curtain from the thoughtless commercial exploitation of the sixties and seventies, it could develop a more sustained and friendly tourism since 1989. The coast and the region beyond have kept their old charms.

The town of Putbus on the island of Rügen has been built completely in classicistical style. The picture shows the Badehaus (bathhouse) of seaside resort Lauterbach, part of Putbus. The architect was Karl Friedrich Schinkel, for the duke Wilhelm Malte I of Putbus. It will be part of a spa hotel from 2007 on. Photo paul Smit.
