Germany: Gardens and Castles in the East
Much longer than other European countries Germany consisted of feudal states in varying sizes. It took until 1871 for this situation to change, when Bismark molded the territories into one unified nation. For us, travellers, the caleidoscopic map of former countships, duchies and kingdoms is a treasor trove of castles, palaces and country houses, parks and gardens. Because no monarch or duke, however small, had deemed his power complete without these status symbols.

Restaurant Waldschänke, a former foresters house, is situated near Jachtschloss Moritzburg, a baroque hunting lodge in the middle of the forest not far from Dresden. It has seven different dining rooms, of which the Prinzenzimmer with its leather wallcoverings and beautiful stove of Meissner china is the most attractive. 'Gardens of Großsedlitz near Dresden.'
August der Starke (August the Strong), king of Saxonia and Poland, was an party animal and the baroque gardens of Großsedlitz were intended as the largest entertainment park for his guests in Saxony. Although it never got finished because of money problems, it still is the largest and best example of the Saxonian interpretation of a French/Italian baroque garden. Its two orangeries are huge, the palace, however, is nothing more than a villa. August der Starke (August the Strong), king of Saxonia and Poland, was an party animal and the baroque gardens of Großsedlitz were intended as the largest entertainment park for his guests in Saxony. Although it never got finished because of money problems, it still is the largest and best example of the Saxonian interpretation of a French/Italian baroque garden.
