Maritime Alps: Three Hikes above the Tinée valley
The Tinée river has created the deepest valley in the french maritime Alps. Hiking here means suffering large differences in altitude, with superb views and a lot of diversity as rewards. Adding to this diversity is the fact that Roure, our 'base camp' overlooking the Tinée from a balcony position, is situated right at the border between Alps and Méditerranée.

'Irrigation canal of Roure.'
Since the Middle Ages the perched village of Roure has an irrigation system not very different from Arab oasis. The water is brought in by a small canal, 8 km long, flanking steep slopes and breaking through tunnels. Nowadays this water is only used for watering the gardens. Photo Paul Smit.
