'Egon Schiele Museum, Tulln.'

The entrance gate of the Egon Schiele Museum in Tulln, a town along the Danube west of Vienna. Schiele was born in Tulln. The exposition shows work of his younger years. Photo Paul Smit.

"Arching like a Celt.'

Excavation of the Century they called the events following a farmer ploughing up a little bronze ring in 1980, near Mitterkirchen. Eighty Celtic graves saw the light and inspired village officials and archeologists to reconstruct a Celtic settlement, including a burial mound. Visitors are not only invited to have a look in this prehistorical open air museum, they can do things themselves. Like arching. Photo Paul Smit.

'Buying the best ciders.'

Between Enns and the Strudengau, behind the right shore of the Danube, lies the Mostviertel, the Cider Region. Most means cider as well as juice. Herber Most is cider, but forget about the dry apple beer as we know it. Herber Most is refreshingly acid with a velvety aftertaste, has no bubbles and is made for 2/3 from pears. Süßmost is the unfermented juice of both apples and pears. The best address for tasting and buying ciders is the Mostgalerie in Stift Ardagger. Photo Paul Smit.

'National Park Donau-Auen.'

Just outside the eastern gates of Vienna the quiet of nature begins. National Park Donau-Auen (Floodplains of the Danube) gives the river the chance to relax after it has left it's main water source, the Alps, behind. Old river arms revive when the water level rises, like in this picture, to become clear lakes when the level falls. Actually the Danube breathes through a net of side arms, covered in riparian forest. Life is abundand, even turtles live here in the wild. Photo Paul Smit.

'Winegrowers family Kitzler, a Welcome Ticket B & B.'

Federal state Niederösterreich has developed a great way to travel freely: the Welcome Ticket. With this voucher system, you enjoy freedom and independence in planning your travels. You choose when you want to travel and for how long. You can take any route and stay overnight wherever you please – two nights in one place, three in another. Or you can spend your entire holiday with just one host. A voucher costs 20 euros (children 11) and opens the door to 270 B&B's, farms, pensions and hotels, like this B&B of the Kitzlers in Rohrendorf. Halfboard or three star accomodations cost 2 vouchers. Moreover, the voucher accomodations stay open all year round. Photo Paul Smit.

'Schlögener Schlinge.'

After cycling, walking is the most popular activity along the Danube. For instance at the Donau-Höhen-Rundwanderweg (Danube Hills Path) between Passau and Linz. Favourite spot for a break is the viewpoint above the rivers's largest loop near Schlögen, nicely called Schlögener Schlinge. Photo Paul Smit.
