Germany: Coast and Islands of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern
The coast of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, with its islands Rügen, Hiddensee, Usedom and Fischland-Darss-Zingst, has become the favourite sea destination of the Germans. Safely kept away behind the Iron Curtain from the thoughtless commercial exploitation of the sixties and seventies, it could develop a more sustained and friendly tourism since 1989. The coast and the region beyond have kept their old charms. This selection of images is not yet complete. We just started uploading and will add others with time. On this moment only winter/early spring pictures of hanseatic town Stralsund and the nearby islands Rügen and Hiddensee are shown.

Marienkirche in Bergen, Island of Rügen.
Interior of the Marienkirche in Bergen, the capital of the island of Rügen. The church is completely covered with frescoes, discovered behind layers of plaster at the end of the 19th century. They were restored then, but now they need restoration again and the church seeks donations. The Marienkirche is a great example of the Backsteingotik, the brick architecture of the Gothic period, typical of the regions around the Baltic. Photo Paul Smit.
