Smit & Palarczyk > [FRANCE.ALPSSOUTH 02005] 'Perched village Marie.' Marie certainly is a village-with-a-view, situated on a ridge above the Tinée valley, like most of the Tinée villages. Sun, clouds and mountains play a game of light and shadow. Photo Paul Smit.
Smit & Palarczyk > [FRANCE.ALPSSOUTH 02010] 'Perched village Ilonse.' One village south of Roure you will encounter Ilonse, probably the most spectacularly situated of the perched villages above the Tinée valley. Photo Paul Smit.
Smit & Palarczyk > [FRANCE.ALPSSOUTH 01924] 'Butterfly valley.' An Apollo moth (Parnassius apollo) on a thistle in the Vallon de la Mollières, a side valley of the Tinée, in Mercantour national park. Up from hamlet Mollières it is so rich in butterflies and moths in summer that the slopes get more colour from their wings then from the abundant flowers. Photo Paul Smit.
Smit & Palarczyk > [FRANCE.ALPSSOUTH 01970] 'Mercantour: Montagne Haute.' Simply called Montagne Haute or High Mountain the ridge standing above the Plateau de Longon in the Mercantour national park offers a stunning view to Mont Mounier in front and the Tinée valley to the right. Photo Paul Smit.

'Islands in the clouds.'

Crossing the border back into France from Torri in Liguria suddenly I walk above the clouds. Mountain tops and pine forests perch above the undulating cotton-wool clouds like islands, as serene as a Chinese painting. In the distance the snowcapped Alps of Mercantour. Photo Paul Smit.
Smit & Palarczyk > [SWITZER.TICINO 01294] 'Chinese wall?' In Bellinzona three strongholds nearly close the Ticino valley with their huge walls. Since the Gotthardpass route is following that valley towards Italy, who owned these castles controlled a principal traderoute across the Alps. UNESCO added the complex to their list of World Heritage Sites. Photo Paul Smit.
Smit & Palarczyk > [SWITZER.TICINO 01350] 'Madonna del Sasso.' Pilgrimage church Madonna del Sasso is the symbol of Locarno. In the evening, when the floodlights switch on and a string of lights embraces the Lago Maggiore, the spot has lost nothing of its original charm. A historical cable train brings you up. Photo Paul Smit.
Smit & Palarczyk > [ITALY.PIEMONTE 01593] 'Goats with a view.' While in high season tourists are trapped in the traffic on the road circling Lago Maggiore, a few hundred meters up you'll find perfect quietness. Take a hike and share the marvellous panoramas with the goats. The Alto Verbano offers the best slopes for such walks. Photo Paul Smit.
Smit & Palarczyk > [ITALY.PIEMONTE 01662] 'Isola Bella.'The 'beautiful island', main sight of the Lago Maggiore, is a man made piece of art. The garden is an ode to rationality, typical for the baroque. Strong geometry and symmetry typify the terraces rising high above the lake, adorned with statues and balustrades. At the same time the garden breathes surrealism. Photo Paul Smit.
