'Eco village.'

Torri Superiore is one single building, apparently a collection of towers (Torri), creating a maze. It reveals itself as the organisational nerve centre of the European network of eco-villages. It is situated near Torri, the main village, about 20 km from the coast. Photo Paul Smit.

'Wasserburg Kapellendorf near Weimar.'

Not far from Weimar, near Kapellendorf, the largest water castle of eastern Germany can be found, gothic in its origin. It has remained in its original state, boasts a five cornered floorplan, a high, 12th-century living tower and is surrounded by a canal. Photo Paul Smit.

'Schloss Burgk.'

The late gothic Burgk castle rises high above the meandering river Saale. Most remarkable is the separate, round Hungerturm (hunger tower) with its half-timbered extension looking like a knight's helmet from an eastern fairy tale. The still fully intact, late gothic kitchen with Germany's biggest stove, no less than 21 meters high, is definitely worth a visit. And during the tourist season the chapel with its rich rococo interior hosts weekly concerts on the famous Silbermann organ. Photo Paul Smit.

'Burg Ranis.'

The impressive stronghold of Ranis sits on a rock of 400 meters long. Its origins are medieval, but around 1600 it was given an extensive renaissance facelift. With its pre-, main- and lower castle it is one of the bigger fortified places of Thüringen. Photo Paul Smit.

'Saaleck above the Saale.'

Along the Saale you will find many castles and strongholds; the middle part of the valley holds no less than forty! Saaleck near Bad Kösen, proud even in ruins, is one of the most popular castles of Germany. Just like the Tower of London it has a historical connection with ravens, though the birds have not prevented its demise. Photo Paul Smit.

'Watermill and Ottonic abbeychurch, Quedlinburg.'

Maybe the most beautiful town of Germany: Quedlinburg. In 1994 UNESCO rightly took the complete town center under protection, thus creating the largest world hertitage site of the Germany.

Over a thousand years earlier Finkenherd, now a pittoresque square at the foot of the fortified hill, was an open space in the wood. Heinrich, duke of Saxonia, had left his governmental tasks and went catching finches. The birds had to shine at the singing birds contests he used to participate in, which have continued to exist up until today. Suddenly a group of richly dressed horsemen came forward from the woods and fell on their knees for the amazed Heinrich. They were counts, dukes and nobleman, honouring him as their emperor.

Thus Heinrich der Vogler (Henry the Birdman) became the first emperor of the first Ottonic dynasty, named after his son Otto. Heinrich established his first Paltz, Quiltenburg, on the isolated mound in the forest, immediately behind Finkenherd. Around this hill, which not only holds the fortification but also a beautiful Ottonic abbey church (photos), grew the city of Quedlinburg. Her medieval centre is that big I’d advise not to take a townplan. Lose your way and let yourself be surprisedLose your way and let yourself be surprised by the coblestone alleys, the timber framed houses and the medieval squares and churches. Photo Paul Smit.
