'Buckskin Gulch.’

The spectacular 'polished’ walls of the Buckskin Gulch, a branch canyon of the Paria River, are formed during flash floods as stones and pebbles hit the walls at great speed. Photo Mick Palarczyk.

'Wire Pass Canyon.’

During flashfloods in the Wire Pass Canyon, a branch canyon of the Paria River, branches and stones are transported through the narrow gulch at great speed. Some of them get stuck between opposing walls, reminder the hiker how dangerous this environment can be during rainy periods. Photo Paul Smit.

'Paria Canyon-2.’

A trek through the colourful Paria Canyon involves crossing the water every hundred meters. Using a stick can help you to avoid quicksand. The canyon of the Paria (a tributary of the Colorado) can be found east of Kanab and south of route 89. Photo Mick Palarczyk & Paul Smit.

’Gorges de Daluis.’

Carved in red slate, with its shades of purple and violet, the steep and narrow Gorges de Daluis (Alpes-Maritimes, France) is one of the most beautiful and spectacular canyons in Europe. At just 1,5 hours from Nice and the Côte d'Azur it is more accessible then its famous counterparts in the American Southwest, with less hikers. If you don't mind getting wet feet you can walk its complete length. Photo Paul Smit.

’Gorges de Daluis.’

There are spots where hardly any light reaches the bottom of the steep and narrow Gorges de Daluis (Alpes-Maritimes, France). Carved in red slate, with its shades of purple and violet, it is one of the most beautiful and spectacular canyons in Europe. At just 1,5 hours from Nice and the Côte d'Azur it is more accessible then its famous counterparts in the American Southwest, but you meet fewer hikers. ’Gorges de Daluis.’

Being at the bottom of a deep, near-vertical canyon is an impressing experience. The Gorges de Daluis (Alpes-Maritimes, France), carved in red slate, is one of the most spectacular canyons in Europe. If you accept wet feet, you can hike its complete length without difficulty. Photo Paul Smit.

’Folded paper in the Gorges de Daluis.’

Massive rock looking like folded alu paper, one of the highlights of the Gorges de Daluis, at a 1,5 hour drive from Nice and the Côte d'Azur. This gorge, carved in red slate, is as spectaculair as the famous slot canyons of the American Southwest. And although it is closer to civilisation and more easily accessible, it attracts less visitors. I counted thirteen on a sunny august day! You can hike the complete length of the canyon if you are not afraid of wet feet. Photo Paul Smit.
