Schloss Kochberg, Großkochberg.'

When visiting Schloss Kochberg, don’t forget to enter the village church opposite the castle. Not very remarkable on the outside, but the interior is something else alltogether, one of the architectural and artistic highlights of the Thüringen countryside. Not only for the beautiful gothic altar piece, but also because of the paintings on the ceiling. They are really cheerful and a good example of the German Volksbarock. Photo Paul Smit.

'Castle of Stolberg, Harz.'

The castle of Stolberg offers a pleasant view upon the most picture perfect town of the eastern Harz. Stolberg has no suburbs, survived all wars unscathed and has the best kept half-timbered houses of all towns in the former GDR. Even in communistic times the incoming roads were of flawless quality. One reason for this is that many secret service employees went on holiday here and government officials often chose this location to invite their high guests. But the main reason is that Thomas Müntzer was born here, leader of the farmers’ revolts of 1525. And therefore the first Great Revolutionary!

Four valleys and four ribbons of white half-timbered houses with orange roofs converge upon the market square with its unusual town hall dating from 1482. It has no stairs on the inside, forcing city employees outside when they want to go to another floor. Two panoramic paths surround the village, the Untere and the Obere Bandweg. The lower starts at the castle. Photo Paul Smit.

'Watermill and Ottonic abbeychurch, Quedlinburg.'

Maybe the most beautiful town of Germany: Quedlinburg. In 1994 UNESCO rightly took the complete town center under protection, thus creating the largest world hertitage site of the Germany.

Over a thousand years earlier Finkenherd, now a pittoresque square at the foot of the fortified hill, was an open space in the wood. Heinrich, duke of Saxonia, had left his governmental tasks and went catching finches. The birds had to shine at the singing birds contests he used to participate in, which have continued to exist up until today. Suddenly a group of richly dressed horsemen came forward from the woods and fell on their knees for the amazed Heinrich. They were counts, dukes and nobleman, honouring him as their emperor.

Thus Heinrich der Vogler (Henry the Birdman) became the first emperor of the first Ottonic dynasty, named after his son Otto. Heinrich established his first Paltz, Quiltenburg, on the isolated mound in the forest, immediately behind Finkenherd. Around this hill, which not only holds the fortification but also a beautiful Ottonic abbey church (photos), grew the city of Quedlinburg. Her medieval centre is that big I’d advise not to take a townplan. Lose your way and let yourself be surprisedLose your way and let yourself be surprised by the coblestone alleys, the timber framed houses and the medieval squares and churches. Photo Paul Smit.

Smit & Palarczyk > Klosterneuburg, on the western outskirts of Wien (Vienna), is known for its monastery (Stift Klosterneuburg). The church exterior is romanesque and gothic, but the towers have been redesigned in neo-gothic style around 1880. Photo Paul Smit.
