Smit & Palarczyk > [AUSTRIA.NIEDER 03652] Danube at Stein.' The Frauenbergkirche, the St. Nikolauskirche behind it and Stift Göttweig, the huge monastery on the hill in the distance, are all part of the Wachau charm, the UNESCO World Heritage Site along the Austrian Danube. Double town Krems-und-Stein is my favourite historical town in this region. Be drawn into a church by the sound of its organ, get lost in the cobbled streets or climb above the roofs on the vineyard slopes.

Smit & Palarczyk > [ITALY.LOMBARD 01809] 'Hermitage with a view .' The Santa Caterina hermitage is built on a breathtaking spot halfway up a cliff over Lago Maggiore. Here a hermit once retreated in a cave. He helped people with spiritual advise and medical care. Asking what he wanted in return he said "a chapel." Later a church and small monastery grew from it, still occupied by several lay brothers and sisters plus one friar and open to visitors. Photo Paul Smit.
