Smit & Palarczyk > [ITALY.PIEMONTE 01706] 'Isola Madre landing stage.' The landing stage of Isola Madre symbolises what this island is about: a beautiful 'English' style exotical garden. Photo Paul Smit.
Smit & Palarczyk > [ITALY.PIEMONTE 01712] 'Isola Madre.' Seen from the water already you understand what Isola Madre is about: a beautiful 'English' style exotical garden. Photo Paul Smit.
Smit & Palarczyk > [ITALY.PIEMONTE 01713] 'Round-trip-boat.' At the Lago Maggiore the round-trip-boats, connecting important sights and towns all around the lake, are exclusively aimed at summer tourists, therefore offering no good alternative to the car out of season. Neither do they sail in the evening. Which make them no true part of public transport, as is the case at some lakes in the northern Alps. Photo Paul Smit.
Smit & Palarczyk > [ITALY.PIEMONTE 01717] 'The villa, Isola Madre.' Isola Madre in Lago Maggiore is an 'English' style garden, but very exotical. Even its villa is covered with flowers. Photo Paul Smit.
Smit & Palarczyk > [ITALY.PIEMONTE 01723] 'Chapel Square, Isola Madre.' The square is situated between the villa, from where the picture is taken, and the family chapel. Most of Isola Madre is an 'English' style garden, but very exotical. Photo Paul Smit.
Smit & Palarczyk > [ITALY.PIEMONTE 01724] 'Lotus.' Lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) at Isola Madre in Lago Maggiore. With its alien appearance the unripe seedbox attracts more attention then the flower. Photo Paul Smit.
Smit & Palarczyk > [ITALY.PIEMONTE 01725] 'Sweating gardener.' Everywhere on Isola Madre you recognize the 'English' way of gardening, with exotical plants coming from all over the world. But ofcourse no gardener is English. Heavy sweating Italoboys do the work. They make Isola Madre the most interesting place to be among the Borromeo Islands, for garden lovers that is. Photo Paul Smit.
Smit & Palarczyk > [ITALY.PIEMONTE 01735] 'Best panorama.' The best spot for looking down on Lago Maggiore and the Borromeo Islands is the Giardino Botanico Alpinia, a short walk from the Alpino cable car station above Stresa. Photo Paul Smit.
