Cathedral of Torcello with kayak.
'Cathedral of Torcello with kayak.'
The kayak offers a wonderful way to explore the Venetian Lagoon (Laguna Veneta or Laguna di Venezia). The cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta on the island of Torcello in the northern lagoon, with its huge campanile, is an example of Venetian-Byzantine architecture, one of the most ancient religious edifices in the Veneto and containing the earliest mosaics in the area of Venice. Now an agricultural hamlet of 14 inhabitants, in the 10th century Torcello was the largest city in the lagoon, with more then 10.000 inhabitants, which explains the size and importance of the cathedral.
