'Winegrowers family Kitzler, a Welcome Ticket B & B.'

Federal state Niederösterreich has developed a great way to travel freely: the Welcome Ticket. With this voucher system, you enjoy freedom and independence in planning your travels. You choose when you want to travel and for how long. You can take any route and stay overnight wherever you please – two nights in one place, three in another. Or you can spend your entire holiday with just one host. A voucher costs 20 euros (children 11) and opens the door to 270 B&B's, farms, pensions and hotels, like this B&B of the Kitzlers in Rohrendorf. Halfboard or three star accomodations cost 2 vouchers. Moreover, the voucher accomodations stay open all year round. Photo Paul Smit.

Danube at Stein.'

The Frauenbergkirche, the St. Nikolauskirche behind it and Stift Göttweig, the huge monastery on the hill in the distance, are all part of the Wachau charm, the UNESCO World Heritage Site along the Austrian Danube. Double town Krems-und-Stein is my favourite historical town in this region. Be drawn into a church by the sound of its organ, get lost in the cobbled streets or climb above the roofs on the vineyard slopes.

'Ugly?'

Baroque, the style that elsewhere along the Danube can be described as elegant and playful, seems to have lost all its lightheartedness at the Göttweig monastery. The only thing that counts is to impress. Gottfried Bessel, the 50th abbot, had tight connections to the imperor. He dreamed about a Austrian Escorial on his hilltop, overlooking the Danube and Krems in the distance. After a fire in 1718, which, so is told, he lit himself, there was space for his ambitions. A huge, square pleasure palace was erected. The gold foil blinds your eyes in the abbey church, but more then only sumptuous everything looks heavy and ponderous. Photo Paul Smit.

Danube with city Krems-und-Stein.'

Stein and its railway bridge over the Danube. Double town Krems-und-Stein is my favourite historical town along the Austrian Danube. With its new Kunstmeile, the Mile of Art connecting Krems with Stein, several museums line up, among them the Caricature Museum. Be drawn into a church by the sound of its organ, get lost in the cobbled streets or climb above the roofs on the vineyard slopes.

'Wine and food directly at the grower.'

East of Krems you find many Kellergassen, like here in Rohrendorf. These are sunken roads lined with wine cellars buried in the earth, where winegrowers offer wine and a good Jausen (harty food). Photo Paul Smit

'Shop of Kloster Und wine college.'

The und in the name Krems-und-Stein has a second meaning. Once halfway both towns a monastery with the name Kloster Und could be found. Now it's a wine college, where you can learn everything about the juice of the grape. Moreover two large cellars invite you to tastings. But don't refrain from visiting the reknown winegrowers themselves (f.i. Weingut Jamek in Weißenkirchen) or the more down to earth Heurigen. Especially in the period of the Sturm (young wine, not yet completely fermented) the atmosphere is good there.

By the way: all things are centered on white wine in the Wachau and Riesling has the biggest name. The winegrowers however think their Grüne Veltliner reaches the same level of excellence. Since it's not known from Tokyo to New York, you can find it for much better prices. Photo Paul Smit.
