'Apollo Fountain and Palace of Versailles.'
The Palace of Versailles without working fountains is like a nightingale without voice. This picture shows the Apollo Fountain (Bassin d'Apollon). It was constructed between 1668 and 1670 by Tuby, after a drawing by Le Brun, and installed and gilded a year later. It depicts the sun god driving his chariot to light the sky. The fountain forms a focal point and serves as a transitional element between the gardens the Grand Canal with its park. Photo Paul Smit.
