'Cime de Baudon.'

From the Cime de Baudon, the highest point on our walk around Gorbio, the view is even more complete. Now the coastline is included, with Roquebrune-Cap-Martin in view, while at the other side the Alps rise high. Photo Paul Smit.

'Carnival lantern.'
The carnival in Basel is famous for its huge lanterns. They show the Sujet (topic) of the Clique (group) of that year. Often these topics are political and criticize aspects of Swiss life or local Basel politics. Photo Paul Smit.

’Coned landscape.’

The landscape with wooded cones south of Lai Châu is the result of tropical karst: limestone dissolving and eroding by rainwater. Photo Mick Palarczyk.
Smit & Palarczyk > [FRANCE.ALPSSOUTH 02005] 'Perched village Marie.' Marie certainly is a village-with-a-view, situated on a ridge above the Tinée valley, like most of the Tinée villages. Sun, clouds and mountains play a game of light and shadow. Photo Paul Smit.
Smit & Palarczyk > [FRANCE.ALPSSOUTH 02010] 'Perched village Ilonse.' One village south of Roure you will encounter Ilonse, probably the most spectacularly situated of the perched villages above the Tinée valley. Photo Paul Smit.
Smit & Palarczyk > [FRANCE.ALPSSOUTH 01931] 'Vallon de la Mollières.' Vallon de la Mollières, a side valley of the Tinée, in Mercantour national park. Up from hamlet Mollières it is so rich in butterflies and moths in high summer that the slopes get more colour from their wings then from the abundant flowers. Photo Paul Smit.
Smit & Palarczyk > [FRANCE.ALPSSOUTH 01970] 'Mercantour: Montagne Haute.' Simply called Montagne Haute or High Mountain the ridge standing above the Plateau de Longon in the Mercantour national park offers a stunning view to Mont Mounier in front and the Tinée valley to the right. Photo Paul Smit.

'Examples of karst.'

North of the Col de la Madone de Gorbio, the scene shifts from green and rich in flowers to dry and barren. The water as it seeps through has eaten away at the limestone, leaving behind razor-sharp fins. A textbook example of a ‘karst’ landscape. Photo Paul Smit.
