’The heart of the Cantal volcano.’
From the Vallée de Mandailles near the village of Rudez you have a fine view of a green landscape with old barns and the higher summits at the centre of the Cantal. To the left sits the Puy Griou, a volcanic plug. Geologists think that this was once the central duct of the giant Cantal volcano, the largest stratovolcano of Europe. Lava coagulated in the duct after which the surrounding material eroded away and the more resistant lava plug remained. Photo Mick Palarczyk.
