Because Sebastian survived this execution and because plagues were thought to be delivered by arrows, Sebastian's name was invoked to protect the faithful from the plague. Top left we see him imprisoned because of his pro-Christian attitude. In the centre he is brought before the emperor and top right we see him standing dressed as a nobleman. Below left is the well-known scene of his execution. In the centre Sebastian, nursed back to health, is condemning Diocletian for his cruelty.
