Smit & Palarczyk > [GERMANY.MECKLENBURG 4]
'Park Rheinsberg.'

The Rheinsberg castle and park are situated at Lake Grienerick, in the southern corner of the Mecklenburg lake plateau. This is where Prussian king Friedrich der Große (Frederick the Great) used to live as crown prince. Around 1900 the wealthy Berlin bourgeoisie discovered the baroque village as a health spa. As did writer Kurt Tucholsky, who got so excited about the place he situated his next novel there: "Rheinsberg - ein Bilderbuch für Verliebte" ("Rheinsberg, a picture book for lovers").

It made the town famous, and since the fall of the Berlin Wall pilgrimage to the city started once again, not by health seekers this time but by lovers! Photo Paul Smit.
Smit & Palarczyk > [ITALY.PIEMONTE 01644] 'Sunrise over Isola dei Pescatori .' The only true village of the Borromeo Islands is situated on Isola dei Pescatori, the Fishermen's Island. Once only the fishermen from this island had the right to fish in the Lago Maggiore. Nowadays the inhabitants catch tourists in their fishrestaurants and souvenirshops. Between 11 am and 5 pm it's a kermis, but beyond and out of season it has lost little of its charm. Photo Paul Smit.
Smit & Palarczyk > [SWITZER.MITTEL 00861] 'Steckborn am See 1.' Now and then it seems the 19th century Bodensee idyll still exists. The soft light, pastel colours, a romantic little castle at the shore and a dreaming girl with her cat. Photo Paul Smit.
Smit & Palarczyk > [SWITZER.MITTEL 00872] 'Schloß Arenenberg.' The terrace of Schloß Arenenberg has a nice view over lake Untersee. Here Napoleon III grew up. His mother, queen of Holland during Napoleon I, found asylum here after the defeat of Waterloo. Photo Paul Smit.
Smit & Palarczyk > [GERMANY.BAYER 00695] 'Little 'Lederhose'.' Proudly stepping into the lake beside his mother, the little boy in his cute 'Lederhose' braves the early May water temperature of the Bodensee near Wasserburg. Photo Paul Smit.
Smit & Palarczyk > [GERMANY.BAWU 00768] 'Flower island 3.' Not only is Mainau extremely busy between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., the light is the least flattering for flowers. Go before 10 (from 7 a.m. on) and the flowering fields are at their best … and all yours. Photo Paul Smit.
Smit & Palarczyk > [SWITZER.MITTEL 00859] 'Monastery on Werd.' The tiny Franciscan monastery St. Otmar, withdrawn on the tiny island of Werd in the Rhine next to Stein am Rhein. Six monks still live here. Photo Paul Smit.
