'Marriage in Menton.'

'Park Rheinsberg.'

The Rheinsberg castle and park are situated at Lake Grienerick, in the southern corner of the Mecklenburg lake plateau. This is where Prussian king Friedrich der Große (Frederick the Great) used to live as crown prince. Around 1900 the wealthy Berlin bourgeoisie discovered the baroque village as a health spa. As did writer Kurt Tucholsky, who got so excited about the place he situated his next novel there: "Rheinsberg - ein Bilderbuch für Verliebte" ("Rheinsberg, a picture book for lovers").

It made the town famous, and since the fall of the Berlin Wall pilgrimage to the city started once again, not by health seekers this time but by lovers! Photo Paul Smit.

It was in Rheinsberg that I met this couple, baby in pram, reading each other pages from Tucholsky. I saw Claire and Wolfgang, protagonists from the book, come alive in their eyes. And though they never got each other, they experienced a few happy days in Rheinsberg. Photo Paul Smit.

 'Copa Kagrana.'

Nowadays young Viennese go to the new entertainment district at the Donau-Insel, the Island in the Danube, part of the Kagran quarter. It's better known under the nickname Copa Kagrana, because in summer it's hot here, the Brasilien way. The style of the bars along the water as well as the taste of the cocktails have something tropical, the rest of the architecture is colourful and modern. Vienna always had turned its back towards the Danube, but those days are over. Photo Paul Smit.

 'Whistling Old spinsters.'

During the Basler Fasnacht (carnival in Basel) two Alti Dantes (old spinsters) pipe while walking along the Rhine. Mind you, in daily life they are a couple. You can see the beard of the man, at right. Why do people pipe during the carnival - very loud, high pitched and seemingly chaotic - often for more then an hour in a row without stopping? That's what carnival, in its heathen origins, is all about: scaring away the winter! Photo Paul Smit.

'Vienna flair.'

Many clichés about Vienna are true, but one has turned wrong: that Vienna is droll. After the fall of the Berlin Wall suddenly Vienna wasn't a provincal town at the edge of Europe anymore, but a metropole in its heart. The last ten years the rejuvenation has accelerated. Vienna has flair like in the old days! Photo Paul Smit.

'Pictured with the king of waltz.'

Nothing in Vienna is being photographed more often then the gold plated statue of Johann Strauß in the Stadtpark. It's the King of Waltz who is behind the fable of the blue Danube, by the way. Photo Paul Smit.
Smit & Palarczyk > [FRANCE.ALPSSOUTH 01970] 'Mercantour: Montagne Haute.' Simply called Montagne Haute or High Mountain the ridge standing above the Plateau de Longon in the Mercantour national park offers a stunning view to Mont Mounier in front and the Tinée valley to the right. Photo Paul Smit.
