'Carnival queue.'

Queing for the ferry over the Rhine (Rhein) during the Basler Fasnacht, the carnival of Basel. There are three ferries in town, and none has a motor. They use a cable and the force of the streaming water. Photo Paul Smit.

'Stift Engelszell at the Danube.'

At Austria's only Trappist monastery the monks don't brew beer but stronger stuff, like a nice, very creamy advocaat. After a visit to the church you indeed need a nip; quite shocking, these skeletons of saints in their gilded glass coffins. Photo Paul Smit.
Smit & Palarczyk > [ITALY.PIEMONTE 01628] 'Isola dei Pescatori.' The only true village of the Borromeo Islands is situated on Isola dei Pescatori, the Fishermen's Island. Once only the fishermen from this island had the right to fish in the Lago Maggiore. Nowadays the inhabitants catch tourists in their fishrestaurants and souvenirshops. Between 11 am and 5 pm it's a kermis, but beyond and out of season it has lost little of its charm. Photo Paul Smit.
Smit & Palarczyk > [ITALY.PIEMONTE 01681] 'In the gardens of Isola Bella.' View over Lago Maggiore from the gardens of Isola Bella, indeed the 'beautiful island.' Photo Paul Smit.
Smit & Palarczyk > [ITALY.PIEMONTE 01684] 'Lago Maggiore seen from Isola Bella.' The 'beautiful island', main sight of the Lago Maggiore, is a man made piece of art. An ode to rationality, being baroque, as well a surrealistic dream. Photo Paul Smit.
Smit & Palarczyk > [ITALY.PIEMONTE 01713] 'Round-trip-boat.' At the Lago Maggiore the round-trip-boats, connecting important sights and towns all around the lake, are exclusively aimed at summer tourists, therefore offering no good alternative to the car out of season. Neither do they sail in the evening. Which make them no true part of public transport, as is the case at some lakes in the northern Alps. Photo Paul Smit.
Smit & Palarczyk > [GERMANY.BAWU 00700] 'Meersburg.' It is the combination of a mild climate, friendly scenery and picturesque old towns like Meersburg that makes the Bodensee attractive. A fleet of round-trip-boats connects all towns and sites. Photo Paul Smit.
Smit & Palarczyk > [GERMANY.BAWU 00710] 'Meersburg vineyards.' Most people don't leave Meersburg, one of the top attractions at the Bodensee, for a walk. And that's a pity, because it is surrounded by vineyards. Photo Paul Smit.
Smit & Palarczyk > [GERMANY.BAWU 00746] 'White Fleet.' Good alternative to the car: the Weiße Flotte, as the combined German, Swiss and Austria round-trip-boats on the Bodensee are called. Punctual, arriving at all main destinations and accepting cyclists.v
