’Mermaid's head in shell grotto at Leek.’
The interior of a garden-house on the Nienoord Estate near the village of Leek has been decorated with mosaics of mollusks around 1700 AD by Italian craftsmen. Here we see the head of a mermaid which occupies an alcove in the western wall. It is largely filled out with local Dutch shells but elsewhere tropical specimens have been used. Photo Mick Palarczyk.
