’Gerbert od Aurillac as a young shepherd.’
Gerbert of Aurillac ( ca. 946 - 1003) is one of the famous people of the Cantal. We see him here as a young shepherd studying the stars on the moment that his genius is discovered by monks from Aurillac. Gerbert would become a prolific scholar and teacher and eventually became pope in 999 AD. This rather anachronistic relief (telescopes did not exist in the 10th century!) can be found on the socle of a statue of him in Aurillac (by David d'Angers, 1851, bronze). Photo Mick Palarczyk.
