'Eco village.'

Torri Superiore is one single building, apparently a collection of towers (Torri), creating a maze. It reveals itself as the organisational nerve centre of the European network of eco-villages. It is situated near Torri, the main village, about 20 km from the coast. Photo Paul Smit.

'Burg Ranis.'

The impressive stronghold of Ranis sits on a rock of 400 meters long. Its origins are medieval, but around 1600 it was given an extensive renaissance facelift. With its pre-, main- and lower castle it is one of the bigger fortified places of Thüringen. Photo Paul Smit.

'Castle of Stolberg, Harz.'

The castle of Stolberg offers a pleasant view upon the most picture perfect town of the eastern Harz. Stolberg has no suburbs, survived all wars unscathed and has the best kept half-timbered houses of all towns in the former GDR. Even in communistic times the incoming roads were of flawless quality. One reason for this is that many secret service employees went on holiday here and government officials often chose this location to invite their high guests. But the main reason is that Thomas Müntzer was born here, leader of the farmers’ revolts of 1525. And therefore the first Great Revolutionary!

Four valleys and four ribbons of white half-timbered houses with orange roofs converge upon the market square with its unusual town hall dating from 1482. It has no stairs on the inside, forcing city employees outside when they want to go to another floor. Two panoramic paths surround the village, the Untere and the Obere Bandweg. The lower starts at the castle. Photo Paul Smit.

'Vineyards around Weißenkirchen.'

The Wachau is seen by many as the most beautiful part of the Danube and it's on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. In the eastern part, from Spitz to Krems, wine rules. If you have the chance, visit the region in autumn. Everything is gold and you can see the grape pickers at work, like here on the famous Ried Achleiten slope, producing one of the best Rieslimgs. The Wachau is seen by many as the most beautiful part of the Danube. Indeed, it's hard to find a more romantic landscape between source and Black Sea. It's on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Danube at Stein.'

The Frauenbergkirche, the St. Nikolauskirche behind it and Stift Göttweig, the huge monastery on the hill in the distance, are all part of the Wachau charm, the UNESCO World Heritage Site along the Austrian Danube. Double town Krems-und-Stein is my favourite historical town in this region. Be drawn into a church by the sound of its organ, get lost in the cobbled streets or climb above the roofs on the vineyard slopes.
