’Castle of Peracense.’
The castle of Peracense sits atop a remote crag of red sandstone in the Sierra de Almohaja (Teruel province). It is first mentioned in 1284 when King Pedro III of Aragon used it as a base for capturing the independent Christian kingdom of Azagra whose capital Albarracín lies 25 km to the south. In the 14th century it played a role in the wars between Castile and Aragon because its location commands the gorge through which invading armies could pass between the two kingdoms.
