'Sleeping beauty.'

Quite a sight, these skeletons of saints in their gilded glass coffins in Stift Engelszell, located on the banks of the Danube near Engelshartzell. After a visit you could need a nip. Fortunately, the monks at Austria's only Trappist monastery distillate good drinks. Like a nice, very creamy advocaat. Photo Paul Smit.

Smit & Palarczyk > [VIETNAM.NORTH 21.276] ’Warning against drugs.’ A road sign near Môc Châu reads: ”Hard drugs, an exceptional catastrophe. How it begins . . and ends.” Photo Mick Palarczyk.

'Dinner table.’

Hiking and camping in the Paria Canyon can have its unexpected pleasures, such as this dinner table which has been eroded out of finely layered sandstone that was deposited in a vast desert 200 million years ago. The canyon of the Paria (a tributary of the Colorado) can be found east of Kanab and south of route 89. Photo Paul Smit.

'Potato on pillars.’

Many years of erosion have reduced the sandstone surface, on which this potato-shaped rock once fell, into three slender pillars.
The 70 cm long stone is one of the many weird erosion forms that can be found in the Paria Canyon. Photo Mick Palarczyk.
Smit & Palarczyk > [ITALY.PIEMONTE 01740] 'Holy giant .' A child is looking out of the back of a giant. The Colosso di San Carlone, a huge copper statue dating 1698 of a canonized shoot of the mighty Borromeo-family, overlooks the slopes above Lago Maggiore near Arona, blessing the landscape. As an ordinary mortal you can see the world through his holy eyes by climbing a narrow stairway all the way up into his head. Photo Paul Smit.

Smit & Palarczyk > [GERMANY.BAWU 00803] 'Fountain in Konstanz.' Is Peter Lenk a curse or a blessing? Like with this fountain at the Laube in Konstanz he creates hot dispute all around the Bodensee. Some say his work is amusing, others are profoundly shocked. Photo Paul Smit.
