 'Copa Kagrana.'

Nowadays young Viennese go to the new entertainment district at the Donau-Insel, the Island in the Danube, part of the Kagran quarter. It's better known under the nickname Copa Kagrana, because in summer it's hot here, the Brasilien way. The style of the bars along the water as well as the taste of the cocktails have something tropical, the rest of the architecture is colourful and modern. Vienna always had turned its back towards the Danube, but those days are over. Photo Paul Smit.

'Vienna flair.'

Many clichés about Vienna are true, but one has turned wrong: that Vienna is droll. After the fall of the Berlin Wall suddenly Vienna wasn't a provincal town at the edge of Europe anymore, but a metropole in its heart. The last ten years the rejuvenation has accelerated. Vienna has flair like in the old days! Photo Paul Smit

'Nap in front of the Haas House.'

The Haas Haus (by architect Hans Hollein, 1987-1990) opposite the Stephansdom is a complex of shops, hotel-restaurant Do & Co (have diner on the roof!) and offices. A businessman is taking a nap in front of it. Photo Paul Smit.

'Shopping arcade by Hundertwasser.'

In 1990-91 opposite the Hundertwasserhaus a turn-of-the-century house was converted into an irregularly-shaped shopping arcade by Peter Pelikan and Friedensreich Hundertwasser in Hundertwasser's typical imaginative design. You can have a drink here as well, there is a restaurant and absolutely don't forget to go to the toilet. Photo Paul Smit.
