[GERMANY.THUERINGEN 30478] The Stadtschloss Museum of Weimar has a considerable collection of religious medieval art from Thuringia. Here we see a painted limewood sculpture of St. Maurice (Mauritius) originating from Altenburg, dating from around 1510 and made by the workshop of Jakob Naumann.
Maurice was the leader of a Roman legion stationed at Thebes (Egypt) who refused to depart from his Christian beliefs and was subsequently executed. Normally he is depicted with a black skin, but in this case the artist didn't follow the convention. Photo Mick Palarczyk.
