[GERMANY.THUERINGEN 30457] Goethe and Schiller are buried in the Fürstengruft, the ducal burial chapel of Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach in the Historical Cemetery of Weimar. Due to the presence of the famous poets (whose sarcophagi are visible between the pillars) the tomb is also called Goethe-und Schiller-Gruft. The chapel was designed by the architect Clemens Coudray between 1823 and 1828.
Genetic investigation in 2008 of the skeletal remains in Schiller's sarcophagus proved that the bones were not Schiller's. Since then his sarcophagus is empty. The chapel is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Photo Paul Smit.
