’Lava field near Bend.’

The yellow flowers of Rabbit Brush (Chrysothamnus nauseosus) form a stark contrast to the black lava field that erupted from the nearby cinder cone of Lava Butte, south of Bend, 7000 years ago. Although the mountains of the Cascades Range, visible on the horizon, are volcanos, they are not responsible for this particular lava field. Photo Mick Palarczyk.
