’Shaniko.’

Shaniko (supposedly the local Indian pronunciation of pioneer rancher August Sherneckau's name) is a 'ghost town' 30 km southeast of Maupin. It was built around 1900 as a collection station for the large quantities of wool being produced in central Oregon. The brick building in the background is the Shaniko Hotel and has recently been restored. Photo Mick Palarczyk.
