Nepal: Kathmandu Valley - paulsmit
'Man with cymbals in Thimi.'

On the second day of the Nepalese New Year the narrow lanes of Thimi are crowded with 32 teams of men from each town quarter carrying a khat - a ceremonial palanquin occupied by deities. Each team is accompanied by its own musicians, covered in brilliant orange-red powder. For to drown one's fellows in vermilion powder is a token of respect, just as it honours the gods and goddesses.
