'Bhairava in Bhaktapur's Wakupati Temple.'

The coloured powder on this statue of Bhairava in the courtyard of Bhaktapur's Wakupati Narayan Temple has been smeared across its face by the rain. Bhairava is the fierce manifestation of Shiva, associated with annihilation and the march of time. He can be identified here by his bulging eyes, his mustache and the crescent moon of Shiva in his hair. Photo Mick Palarczyk.
