'Ahlat cemetery in evening sun-2.'

At the Seljuk cemetery of Ahlat, on the western shore of Lake Van, lichen-covered headstones of red volcanic tuff glow in the evening sun. The ca. 8000 steles, which can reach a height of 4 meter, date from the 12th and 13th century and are covered with intricate web patterns. On the horizon the snowcapped volcanic cone of Süphan Dag can be seen. Photo Mick Palarczyk.
