'Ahlat cemetery in morning sun-2.'

At the Seljuk cemetery of Ahlat, on the western shore of Lake Van, headstones of red volcanic tuff glow in the morning sun. The ca. 8000 steles, which can reach a height of 4 meter, date from the 12th and 13th century and are covered with intricate web patterns and Kufic lettering. Photo Mick Palarczyk.
