'Jonah thrown overboard on Akdamar Island.'

Avoiding God's command to prophesy in Nineveh, Jonah flees on a boat in the direction of Tarsus, but is stopped in his flight by a storm which threatens to sink the ship. To appease the sees and God's wrath he allows himself to be thrown overboard by the sailors. Here we see the moment when he is about to be swallowed by a big fish. The relief adorns the southern facade of the 10th century Armenian Cathedral of the Holy Cross on Akdamar, a small island in Lake Van. Photo Mick Palarczyk.
