’Devils in Roure (detail).’

The lower left wall in the St. Sebastian chapel of Roure, a village 45 km north of Nice, showsa group of devils who are leading a priest and a naked woman to hell. This detail shows a devil taking away the aureole of the cleric. The scene echoes a historic village scandal from 1427 in which Pierre Blanqui, priest of Roure, committed adultery with Delphine, the lawful wife of Jean Bovis. The fresco was executed in 1510 by Andrea de Cella, one of the so-called 'peintres primitifs niçois' (primitive painters of Nice).
