France: Chapelle Saint Antoine in Clans
The ceiling and walls of the medieval Chapel of St. Anthony in the Alpine village of Clans are decorated with thirty six scenes from the life of the Egyptian hermit St. Anthony the Great. In addition, the altar wall carries a colourful crucifixion with an enigmatic Black Mary. The paintings were executed by an anonymous 15th century painter but have been partly restored in later centuries.
