France: White Picnic of Versailles on Bastille Day
France: The White Picnic of Versailles on Bastille Day
On Bastille Day, the 14th of July, a wonderful Déjeuner sur l'Herbe is organized in the park of the Palace of Versailles. Thousands of people come together with their picnic baskets and have a festive meal on the banks of the Grand Canal. In English it is known as the Picnic of Versailles or the White Picnic (pique-nique en blanc), since white is the dress code. Many people enjoy to dress up for the occasion and there is even a prize for the most elegant costume!
The afternoon can be spent at the Musical Fountain Show - Grandes Eaux Musicales - when the fountains of the Palace Gardens come to life. Don't miss it, since Versailles without working fountains is like a nightingale without voice.
If you are already in Versailles on Friday evening the 12th of July 2013 (or still on Saturday the 20st), it gets even better: during the Fountains Night Show (Grands Eaux Nocturnes), every fountain has lighting specially designed for it. The Grand Canal mirrors the sunset in the background, while gas flames perform a ballet on baroque music. Splendid fireworks form the final chord. As if the Sun King himself throws a garden party!
