[SPAIN.ARAGON 28715] ’Teruel: Torre de El Salvador.’ The Torre de El Salvador in Teruel, seen from the Calle de El Salvador. This church tower was built in Mudejar style by Moorish craftsmen in the 14th century. Teruel was an important Moorish city and retained significant Muslim communities after its Reconquest by Alfonso II of Aragon in 1171. A common feature of all four Mudejar towers in the city is that they stand separate from the main body of the church, a design most probably influenced by the freestanding minarets of the Muslim world. [SPAIN.ARAGON 28731] ’Santa Maria church tower in Calatayud.’ The bell tower of Calatayud's Santa Maria church was built in the 15th century in Mudejar style by Moorish craftsmen on the site of a mosque. Calatayud was founded by the Moors in the 8th century and conquered by Alfonso I of Aragon in 1119. Surviving examples of Mudejar church architecture show that the Moorish influence lived on in the city. In the background, to the right of the Santa Maria tower, the bell tower of the San Juan church can be seen. Is was built in 1775 in the style of the medieval Mudejar towers. Photo Mick Palarczyk.
