'Eagles on Akdamar Island.'
Relief adorning the southern facade of the 10th century Armenian Cathedral of the Holy Cross, built by king Gacik I Artsruni on Akdamar, a small island in Lake Van. The two eagles on a stylized plant, holding a ring with their beaks, probably refer to the family name of king Gacik, which derived from the Armenian word for eagle. To the left is a figure of the winged archangel Michael. Photo Mick Palarczyk.
